Jesus Christ Superstar: McLeod Summer Playhouse, 1989

The director, Tim Fink wanted to set this production in modern day Washington DC. I initially hadn't a clue how to approach the design until I happened on a photo of the Washington Monument surrounded by scaffolding and plastic tarps during its recent renovation. I placed the scaffolding around the sides and back leaving an open center space with several levels to help with the crowd scenes. The Lighting Designer, Mark Varns, asked me to make the Monument translucent so he could use it like a cyclorama mirroring the emotion of the scene.
