Sleuth: New Harmony Theater, 2001

The small stage at New Harmony poses special problems to the designer. For this production of Sleuth, the director, Scott LeFeber, wanted an act curtain to cover the exit of the actors at the surprising end of each act. There is no fly loft or grand drape and the small stage required that we extend our furniture downstage onto the apron. I decided an old-fashioned roll drop would be an appropriate solution to the rigging problems and then it occurred to me that the drop could depict the set as it appears behind the drop with the show title superimposed over the design.
