After my first two Alder wood masks had been carved I had two small block scraps to play with. Deciding I could only make half-masks from these blocks, I chose to make a couple of commedia styled Zanni masks. This first Zanni I didn’t have a clear idea what I wanted to carve so I just let the wood take me where it wanted. This chubby little pug face emerged and after sanding it I decided to paint it in golden ochre tones.
