Romeo and Juliet: Southern Illinois University, 1989

Director Elizabeth Carlin wanted to make this production immediately accessible to our college and high school audiences. So we chose to set the love story in a not-to-distant-future. We watched numerous science fiction movies such as The Terminator and Mad Max. The result was a post-apocalyptic "Road Warrior Meets Juliet" with stylized Elizabethan costumes and a stainless steel and scaffolding environment devoid of nature. The single barren tree was juxtaposed against a large moon much like Waiting for Godot.
